Mobile operators at risk from new breed of mobile services
March 15th, 2005 - Paris France - VoluBill, a leading provider of mobile data charging technology today warns mobile network operators that their revenues are at risk from peer-to-peer (p2p) mobile services. Free Internet Protocol (IP) calls and data services have the potential to cannibalize legacy services revenues in the mobile world as the range of p2p services on offer continues to grow.
VoluBill's Dialogue Control and Charging Platform (D2CP) provides the answer. It allows operators to analyse - in real time - the traffic going through their network and perform deep packet inspection allowing them to identify, charge and control p2p services. That means that they can charge p2p traffic at a special rate so as not to cannibalise traditional voice revenues and apply digital rights management rules to p2p file transfers. It also means that they can charge and validate content in a way that prevents revenue leakage and content repudiation.
Alain Lefebvre, VP Marketing and Strategic Alliances, VoluBill said : "The telecoms world is converging quickly and the fixed/mobile distinction is becoming increasingly blurred as bandwidth increases. It is now possible to SMS for free and make free phone calls via a WiFi connection. Operators must act now and implement solutions that allow them to analyse IP traffic and potentially apply charges to it that would protect their revenues."
The D2CP is currently deployed throughout Asia, with over 30 million mobile subscribers having their data services controlled and charged by VoluBill. For example, it enables Globe Telecom (a Tier 1 Operator managing more than 10 million subscribers most of them being pre-paid subscribers) in the Philippines to charge its prepaid and postpaid customers for GPRS data services, eliminating revenue leakage and maximising revenues.
About Volubill (www.volubill.com)
