At its core is a real-time control & charging capability (See Figure 1), with modular extensions to support various business models and infrastructure environments. It is designed specifically to interoperate with network elements on the bearer, as well as signalling levels, plus it resides in the network identifying and controlling traffic. Router based network components are employed to provide the enhanced application identification (such as Skype, Bit-torrent and messaging, using DPI), and session control for charging. A key function of CHARGE-IT is to correlate information from multiple network elements and subscriber data repositories to provide holistic information for control, rating and charging purposes, across competing service demands and resource management needs. CHARGE-IT initiates and drives inline dialogue, offline messaging and self-care, to manage a subscriber’s experience, from service access and charging, to top-up and service change. Service providers have a host of interfaces to manage and must continuously monitor subscriber activity and network traffic. Comprehensive interfaces exist to connect CHARGE-IT to billing and customer care systems for data synchronisation and process interoperability, to support flow-through provision, single customer care, legacy integration, centralised product catalogue and data mining.
