Overview

Mobile operators are attempting to address the ever increasing demands for better customer experience associated with the spectacular uptake in smartphone and USB 3G-broadband dongles and demands in bandwidth and latency improvements. This includes considering:
  • Additional high capacity base stations, such as LTE
  • Network re-dimensioning
  • Carrier Ethernet backhauls
  • Core packet network upgrades (xGSN, PDSN and PDN)
Although these improve mobile broadband capacity by enabling better throughput per Mhz of spectrum and data latencies, and lower cost per bit, but these do not necessarily translate to improved customer experience.  MNOs must find a way to ensure broadband capacity is always available to meet the needs of the end user, while keeping additional capacity expansion (capital) expense in check. Although these enable additional throughput per Mhz of spectrum, better data latencies, and lower cost per bit, the ever increasing demand for mobile broadband capacity may still not overcome the need for better customer experience. MNOs must find a way to service this while keeping additional capacity expansion (capital) expense in check.

An attractive and complementary option is to bring and optimize internet & partner content via CDN (content distribution networks), caching and optimization mechanisms closer to the subscriber. These internet mechanisms are well known for improvements in content delivery performance and network utilization that respectively improve latencies and ease congestion chiefly for customer experience whilst also reducing data delivery costs. Also to protect the RAN from indiscriminant congestion, traffic needs to be adaptively and selectively shaped and prioritized according to subscriber spend. And finally, service policies and applications need to overcome the challenges of subscriber cell mobility for ensuring continuous customer experience management.

To realize these critical benefits, Volubill offers the Edge Offload™, a breakthrough experience management solution that enables smart, selective shaping and offload capabilities at aggregation points on the network edge (i.e. RNC in TDM or Carrier Ethernet) towards CDN, caching, optimization and internet partners via the VNS (Volubill Network System) Edge Controller product from Volubill (Figure 1). It incorporates measures to ensure customer traffic continues to be monitored for both policy and charging enforcement on traffic that is not visible to the core network. Internet services can also now act on information normally stripped away by the mobile network core, such as MSISDN numbers and location information.

Additional benefits can include saving costs in backhaul capacity and core network upgrades that can reach tens of millions of dollars annually.
